Designing for Dubai: How Climate Shapes Interior Choices

Dubai is unlike any other design context in the world. The heat, the light intensity, the dust, the contrast between outdoor temperatures and heavily air-conditioned interiors — all of it shapes how we design.

Designers who ignore this produce beautiful rooms that do not work in practice. Here is how climate informs every project we take on in the UAE.

Material selection in extreme heat

Stone and ceramic perform well in Dubai. They stay cool underfoot, they do not warp, and they age well in air-conditioned environments. Solid timber needs careful specification — the movement caused by humidity changes between summer and winter can cause problems if not accounted for in the joinery design.

We avoid materials that look good in a European showroom but were never tested in Gulf conditions.

The light problem

Dubai light is intense and directional. North-facing rooms get flat, even light. South and west-facing rooms get direct sun that bleaches colours and creates harsh contrast. We specify different material tones and window treatments depending on orientation.

Colours that look right in a European context often look washed out or overlit in Dubai. We always sample materials on site before finalising specifications.

Inside-outside living

Most of our residential clients want indoor-outdoor flow — a living room that connects to a pool deck or garden. In Dubai this means managing the temperature transition carefully. Deep overhangs, good shading, and well-placed outdoor fans make the difference between a space you actually use and one you avoid from May to September.

Dust

Fine desert dust gets everywhere. Material choices, joinery detailing, and mechanical ventilation all need to account for it. Matte surfaces show dust more than polished ones. Open shelving collects it faster than closed storage. These are practical realities that good Dubai design addresses from the start.
